Jeffrey Edward Epstein (/ˈɛpstiːn/ EP-steen;[2] January 20, 1953 – August 10, 2019) was an American financier, socialite, and convicted sex offender.[3][4] He began his professional life as a teacher but then switched to the banking and finance sector in various roles, working at Bear Stearns before forming his own firm. He developed an elite social circle and procured many women, including underage girls, who were then sexually abused by Epstein and some of his contacts.[4][5][6]
In 2005, police in Palm Beach, Florida, began investigating Epstein after a parent complained that he had sexually abused her 14-year-old daughter.[7] Epstein pleaded guilty and was convicted in 2008 by a Florida state court of procuring an underage girl for prostitution and of soliciting a prostitute.[8] He served almost 13 months in custody, but with extensive work release. He was convicted of only these two crimes as part of a controversial plea deal; federal officials had identified 36 girls, some as young as 14 years old, whom Epstein had allegedly sexually abused.[9][10]
Epstein was arrested again on July 6, 2019, on federal charges for the sex trafficking of minors in Florida and New York.[11][12] He died in his jail cell on August 10, 2019.[13] The medical examiner ruled the death a suicide.[14] Epstein’s lawyers have disputed the ruling, and there has been significant public skepticism about the true cause of his death.[15][16] Since his death precluded the possibility of pursuing criminal charges, a judge dismissed all criminal charges on August 29, 2019.[17][18] Epstein had a decades-long association with Ghislaine Maxwell, who has faced persistent allegations of procuring and sexually trafficking underage girls for Epstein, which led to her arrest by the FBI on July 2, 2020.[19][20] Epstein also maintained a years-long friendship with Prince Andrew, Duke of York, who resigned from royal duties over his ties to Epstein.[21]

More Accusers Step Forward With Evidence Against Ghislaine Maxwell, Prosecutors Say
Additional accusers of convicted sex offender Jeffrey epstein’s alleged madame, Ghislaine Maxwell, have come forward in the past week and expressed willingness to cooperate with the FBI, federal prosecutors revealed Monday.
New details about Maxwell’s arrest emerged in court documents filed Monday, in which prosecutors argued that Maxwell’s request for bail should be denied. Prosecutors also disclosed that “additional individuals” have come forward with new evidence against Maxwell.

Alleged victims of the longtime associate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey epstein are expected to testify at the defendant’s arraignment and bail hearing, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Alison Moe.
One or more of the victims are expected to ask the court to keep Ghislaine Maxwell detained pending trial, Moe wrote in a memo (pdf) opposing Maxwell’s request to be released on bail.
Maxwell was charged on July 2 in connection with her alleged role in enticing, grooming, and sexually exploiting girls as young as 14. She has denied the charges and plans to defend herself in court.
Two of the alleged victims had not spoken to law enforcement until 2019. Their stories, according to the prosecutors, share remarkably similar details about Maxwell.
“The powerful testimony of these victims, who had strikingly similar experiences with Maxwell, together with documentary evidence and witness testimony, will conclusively establish that the defendant groomed the victims for sexual abuse by Jeffrey epstein,” the prosecutors’ memo states.
